Apothecarie Chemical Peel | Apothecarie New York

Get a beautiful, glowing complexion no matter your skin type, with a personalized chemical peel from Apothecarie! A professional chemical peel safely exfoliates the top layer of your skin, revealing the smooth, evenly-colored new layer below. Much more powerful than at-home peel products, it’s a highly effective way to treat a wide range of skin concerns such as acne, wrinkles, and more.

From enhancing skin tone and texture to boosting collagen production, all of our chemical face peels are fully customized for you. This means that we’ll tailor the acids, boosters and formulation strengths to meet your individual skincare goals. You can be treated to a gentle, skin-enhancing peel ahead of your wedding or get a series of intensive treatments to correct sun damage or acne scarring.

What’s included?

Carried out by highly-trained and experienced professionals, our chemical peel is an approximately 15-minute treatment, plus prep time:

Consultation – We’ll start by examining your skin type and discussing your expectations, so that your skincare technician can select the best combination of acids to make it happen.

Cleanse – This skin-clarifying step is essential to remove any oil, dirt or skincare products such as your moisturizer, allowing the acids in the peel to properly penetrate into the pores.

Peel – Your skincare technician will apply the peel solution to the skin for a carefully-monitored length of time, up to 15 minutes, before rinsing it off.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a chemical peel?

Our basic chemical peel cost is $150. Depending on your skin type and goals, your aesthetician may recommend add-ons which are priced at $75, in order to achieve better/faster results. Available add-ons include LED light therapy, lymphatic treatment, oxygen treatment, cryo sticks, a HydraFacial booster serum, and either the Cold Mask or Masque Collagène Caviar by Biologique Recherche.

What is a chemical peel?

A chemical peel is a solution applied temporarily to the skin that sloughs away dead skin cells on the surface, and stimulates the growth of new cells. Salon treatments work in exactly the same way as at-home acid exfoliators, except that they use professional-grade formulations that are much stronger. They need to be carried out under professional supervision and will typically come with a little downtime (such as redness) while the skin regenerates, but it’s all worth it for the stunning results!

What does the chemical peel contain?

We use a variety of chemical solutions by brands such as NEOVA Smart Skincare, iSClinical, and Dermalogica. Some of the acids we use frequently are salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mandelic acid and TCA (trichloroacetic acid) which each address specific concerns. The exact acid or combination of acids will be chosen by you and your esthetician at the start of your treatment.

How long does a chemical peel take?

The actual peel part of our service lasts up to 15 minutes. It all depends on the strength of the formulas being used, your skin’s natural sensitivity level, and whether you are accustomed to chemical peels or are getting one done for the first time. Our estheticians are trained to know exactly how long to leave the solution on your skin for, in order to achieve the best results with maximum safety.

What are the main chemical peel benefits?

There are so many benefits of chemical peels! Exfoliation is a crucial step in any skincare routine, to remove dead skin cells and other congestion. It also helps to resurface the skin for a smoother texture and more even-looking complexion. Whatever your skin type, a chemical peel can improve it. Here are just a few of the ways it helps:

Chemical peel for acne: A peel helps to ‘deep clean’ and unblock clogged pores, making it much less likely that pimples will form. You can also get a chemical peel for acne scars, which works by removing the old skin and replacing it with fresh new skin that’s less scarred in appearance.

Chemical peel for wrinkles: As we age, cell regeneration slows down and so regularly exfoliating via a chemical peel (which promotes new cell growth) helps the skin to continue looking youthful and bright. One of the best chemical peels for wrinkles is glycolic acid, which has the added benefit of stimulating collagen production.

Chemical peel for hyperpigmentation: A chemical peel for melasma or other types of discoloration (such as sun spots) works by speeding up skin cell turnover, so that your top layer of skin is replaced by a fresh, less-pigmented layer with every treatment.

What is the usual chemical peel recovery time?

That depends on the type of peel you’re having. If it’s a light chemical peel, which is relatively gentle (yet still far stronger than the mild peels sold for at-home use), you may find you’re able to go back to your usual skincare routine more or less right away.

A medium chemical peel penetrates further into the skin and is used to treat scarring, larger wrinkles, and other things that go deeper than just surface level. Your skin will likely feel a little sensitive for a couple of days afterwards.

Finally, there are deep chemical peels - used for the deepest of wrinkles or on skin with significant scarring or sun damage - which are so intensive they’re able to deliver truly dramatic results with a single treatment. But after one of these, expect to have skin that’s sore, red and peeling for around a week.

Speak to your Apothecarie esthetician if you’re concerned about the downtime, or just want to know what to expect. Regardless, we always recommend booking a chemical face peel slightly in advance of any special event so that your skin has time to fully recover before those cameras start flashing!

How many chemical peels does it take to see results?

Assuming you are having either a light or medium chemical peel, you can expect to see a difference right from your first treatment but will see best results with a series of treatments. Exactly how many will depend on the issue you’re treating. Our estheticians should be able to give you a clearer idea of what to expect at your initial consultation. We recommend waiting 4 weeks in between peels to avoid over-exfoliating the skin.

How do I care for my face after a chemical peel?

Proper care for your skin after a chemical peel is important. Immediately following the peel, your skin will be more sensitive to sun damage so it’s extra important to wear a good sunscreen. You’ll also want to keep your skin properly hydrated and moisturized, so be sure to use a high-quality face cream during the day and at night. If your skin is feeling a little sensitive, avoid wearing makeup and cleanse with cold water for its soothing effects.

As far as what not to put on your face after a chemical peel, it’s important to avoid face scrubs or other peeling/exfoliating treatments until your skin recovers. This will ensure that you avoid the irritation that comes from over-exfoliating.

We firmly believe that achieving beautiful skin is 20% professional treatments and 80% your everyday regimen: A good home skincare routine maximizes the results of your peel, while a poor one can end up undoing some of its benefits. As part of your visit, we’ll be happy to recommend an ideal post-peel regimen that’s best for your specific needs.
